Prominent Hong Kong trainer Tony Cruz will be a special guest of the Victoria Racing Club at Black Caviar, The Great Horse Raceday on Saturday 18 February.
Cruz is this week being reunited with three of his horses; Bullish Luck, California Memory and Silent Witness at Living Legends. Both Bullish Luck and Silent Witness will take part in a Parade of Champions in the Flemington Mounting Yard at 4.10pm on Saturday, immediately prior to the Black Caviar Lightning.
Bullish Luck won the 2004 Hong Kong Gold Cup and the 2005 and 2006 Champions Mile at Sha Tin. He was voted Hong Kong Horse of the Year in 2006. California Memory won the Hong Kong Gold Cup, the Sha Tin Trophy and the Hong Kong Cup in 2011, and in 2012 he won the Hong Kong Cup for a second time to become the first horse to achieve this feat. Silent Witness won an impressive 17 consecutive races. He was named World Champion Sprinter in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Cruz started his career in the industry as a jockey in the 1973/74 season. He went on to be Hong Kong’s champion jockey six times and rode 946 winners. He was granted a Hong Kong trainers licence in 1996 and secured the trainer’s title in 1999/2000. He reclaimed the crown in 2005, setting a then record for a season’s winners (91) and earnings (HK$113 million).
