What’s in store for Festival of Racing? With the festivities about to kick off, we’ve pulled together our top raceday highlights for you to look forward to this season. Whether it’s Group 1 racing or a social day trackside, there is sure to be something for everyone! Take a look.
What’s not to love about six unmissable weeks of thoroughbred racing at Caulfield, Flemington, The Valley and Country racetracks? The first Group 1 for the year commences on Saturday, February 10 at Caulfield with the running of the C.F. Orr Stakes, with the last Group 1, the William Reid Stakes at The Valley on Friday, 23 March.
In between, racegoers are set for a thrill with the like of the $1.5 million Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes, the most coveted two-year-old race in Victoria, and as well as the ever-exciting dual Group 1s on Super Saturday in March at Flemington.
There are LOADS of family-friendly activities on offer at racetracks around Victoria over the Festival of Racing, so round up the family for what is set to be a great time for all.
Starting on C.F. Orr Stakes Day, kids can get involved and dress up as their favourite superhero with the chance to meet and be photographed with a superhero on the day. As well as this, there’s lots of free rides, activities and family-friendly entertainment.
On Friday nights under lights at The Valley, free Kelly Sports activities and interactive games on the North Hill will be sure to keep the little ones entertained all night long! Highlights for the family also include live motocross on the infield on Friday 9, February and a spectacular display of fireworks for Chinese New Year, Friday 23 February.
At Flemington’s Black Caviar, The Great Horse Raceday the whole family can enjoy a celebration of Asian culture with colourful Chinese lion dancing and a spectacular display of traditional Japanese drumming. Other kid-friendly fun on the lawn include a cameo appearance from Pokemon favourite, Pikachu along with face painting, balloon animals and arts and crafts.
The Festival of Racing celebrates a different kind of style, encouraging a more relaxed attire than the Spring, which is especially welcomed on those warm summer days!
Ladies, leave the fascinators at home and opt for a wide brim hat and enjoy the comfort and style of some cute embellished sandals.
Gents, mix it up from the traditional suit and put together a pair of tailored chinos and loafers.
So long as you adhere to club dress regulations, you’ll be set to go!
4. Food and Drinks
Not only has Group 1 racing returned for 2018, but so too the flavoursome delights with food and dining options aplenty during the Festival of Racing.
If you’re looking to start your weekend the right way, head to The Valley on a Friday night to experience an endless array of scrumptious food trucks to feast upon and enjoy those summer evenings the Beer Garden with live entertainment.
Keen to enjoy the sunshine? At Caulfield, sip on champagne at the Veuve Clicquot Lawn, or enjoy a cocktail in the Pimm’s Garden Party on Blue Diamond Stakes Day. Experience breathtaking views in the Black Caviar Restaurant with the finest food from celebrated chef, Ian Curley.
An experience not to be missed is at Flemington’s Grazing Trail and Cellar Door on Super Saturday, 10 March. Racegoers have the opportunity to sample a selection from the very best boutique wineries, breweries and producers in Victoria.
