"At just 30, Ben Melham already has 13 Group 1 wins under his belt, stamping himself as one of Victoria's most consistent senior jockeys."
No matter how many more Group 1 races he wins, jockey Ben Melham will always be remembered for a unique piece of racing folklore. The talented rider was aboard champion mare Black Caviar when she won her first Group 1 race in the 2010 Patinack Farm Classic. She would go on to win another 14 Group 1 races under Luke Nolen while Melham, who was only warming the seat while Nolen was suspended, has ridden another 12 himself.
Perhaps the biggest of those was last March when he capitalised on an opportunity for Sydney horseman Gary Portelli, steering fairytale filly She Will Reign to victory in the Golden Slipper (1200m). He'll be back aboard the flying filly during the Festival of Racing, when she tackles the G1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), and he'll also be hoping to continue his successful association with owner Lloyd Williams, for whom he rode Johannes Vermeer into second place in last year's Melbourne Cup.
