"Entering his 27th year as a jockey, Stephen Baster has 13 Group 1 wins under his belt with his most recent coming in the 2017 Crown Oaks."
Star jockey Stephen Baster is often referred to as the smiling assassin of the Victorian riding ranks, and for good reason. One of the most likable and genuine characters in the jockeys' room, he is also one of the most competitive and boasts a Group 1 record that is the envy of many of his rivals.
He's ridden feature winners for many trainers but his current association with horses trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott is particularly lethal, as was seen during the Spring Racing Carnival where he guided Pinot to victory in the G1 Kennedy Oaks (2500m). And he's no stranger to glory at the elite level during the Festival of Racing either with wins in the Oakleigh Plate (1993 on Mookta), Newmarket Handicap (Rubitano in 2002 and Mookta in 1994) and Australian Guineas (Ferlax in 2013) in years gone by.
