The Festival of Racing Season is upon us and whether you're taking the whole family along or just going with a group of friends, an outdoor picnic is a guaranteed pleaser. All you need to do is make sure you've packed all the essentials, and it's smooth sailing from there.
What you're going to eat and drink while you're at the races is as important as what you'll be wearing on the day. While some will opt from something delicious treat from one of the foodie pop ups, we're suggesting you take a picnic basket filled to the brim with tasty cheeses, fine meats and fresh fruits.
So let's start with the basics.
1. Picnic Basket
Well, of course you're going to need a picnic basket! They fit plenty, compliment your relaxed outfit and it's always best to have one basket, over lugging three bags.
2. Picnic Rug / Blanket
While the lush green grass is lovely, a picnic rug is always a welcome addition and helps keep any critters out of the food and you're outfit free from grass stains. .
3. Savoury Food
A good picnic is all about the savoury items and how you balance it with the sweet treats. Soft and Hard Cheeses are always the hero in any picnic, and it's always best to purchase your cheese from a market stall over a supermarket. Not only will you get a better quality product, but you'll be able to seek professional advice and perhaps even try some, too!
Accompany cheeses with a fresh loaf of sourdough that your friends can tear into, some olive oil and dukkah, plus other items like dips, olives, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, cornichons and pickled onions, depending on what you fancy. Delish!
4. Sweet Treats
A bunch of muscatels (small dried grapes) is a great choice for a picnic, as is quince paste, fresh berries (depending on seasonal items), honeycomb and you could even go as far as chocolate coated coffee beans or a cacao spread.
5. Disposable Camera / Film
Having a disposable or polaroid camera is a fantastic idea for a day at the races, and will allow you to cherish the moment with a physical keepsake and keep your phones battery charged to catch your uber home!
